Where Did I Go and The Who?

Please forgive me for not writing a post here sooner. I have no excuse for my extended Rock and Romance Cruise blog hiatus other than being unusually busy with my day job and life in general, including getting my older son acclimated to college life at Arizona State University and undertaking an absurdly chaotic and extended home remodel project.

Although I haven’t been writing about music for a few months, I’ve continued to listen, of course. Sunday, I saw the Who in concert. My third time, actually. Although Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey are now in their late 70s, they still put on a show like no other. With the addition of an orchestra, the sound was complex and rich, perhaps even a bit too much for the size of the venue. Pete even made a few grumbling complaints about the sound quality. But you know what? Even in the least acoustically pleasing environment, The Who is simply one of the best ever.

Hey, who remembers The Who tribute band on the 2019 cruise? If I recall, they were rained out on deck and performed on the main stage. They were very good, too! What was their name? Hmmm…

And before I forget, I must say that I was fully impressed by The Who’s opening act, The Dirty Knobs—fronted by Mike Campbell, the former guitar player from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. An excellent band that would be a major crowd pleaser on our cruise. Mike Campbell was named one of Rolling Stone magazine’s top 100 guitarists and co-wrote some classics that any Tom Petty fan would know including “Refugee”, “Here Comes My Girl”, and “Runnin’ Down a Dream”. He performed all of these, and his voice is so much like Tom Petty’s that it is downright eerie. Can you make recommendations to Star Vista about artists? I’d sure love to see this band on a future cruise. Yes, they’re that good!

Well, as we get closer to our cruise, I’ll be back to writing regularly about all the cruise and music-related stuff that filters into my brain. And again, want to write something? Contact me via the Facebook Group, and let’s get you published!
