Songs in 70's TV Commercials

It’s hard to watch TV these days and not be struck by the barrage of 70’s classic rock and pop songs being used in commercials targeting consumers of a certain age. I think I hear the “Oh, oh, oh, Ozempic” song playing in my head right now. While I’m fairly confident that Pilot never thought their song would be used to promote a diabetes medication, this advertising tactic is undeniably effective by making the commercials and their products more memorable and relatable.

But today’s ad agencies certainly didn’t develop this marketing strategy. There’s a long history of using music to sell products. Here are just a few that you’ll probably remember watching while tuning into The Brady Bunch, Battle of the Network Stars, or Barney Miller.

Plymouth 1978 Arrow

Tint windows, tilt steering, and reclining buckets, the ’78 arrow had it all, including a fantastic commercial featuring Harry Nilsson’s song “Me and My Arrow.” At 39 MPG, maybe they should bring the Arrow back!

Kodak – The Times of Your Life

The Kodak theme song still gets me every time I hear it. Not only was it a super successful ad campaign, the song, sung by Paul Anka, reached No. 7 on the Billboard chart.

Anticipation – Heinz Ketchup

Corey Feldman bums ketchup for his burger from strangers in the park. And Casey Kasem is the voiceover. A true 70s classic commercial!

Still the One – ABC

ABC featured a corny rendition of Orleans “Still the One” for its lineup of shows in ’77. I wonder what these Rock & Romance alumni thought of this promo?

I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke

One of the most iconic commercials of all time with a song that became a Billboard hit. I wonder how many kids, including me, had to sing this song in elementary school chorus? I still remember all the words.
